2013 Kazakh Film: Uroki Garmonii/Уроки гармонии (Harmony Lessons)

Kazakhstan is not a country that often conjures up many images in North Americans' minds, outside Borat, largely because it's a country few foreigners travel to and it's a country still caught between shifting identies due to its history and ethnic makeup. However, as you're about to see, a new drama-film from Kazakhstan, in the Kazakh language, has made it into the 63rd International Berlin Film Festival and as won an award for outstanding artistic contribution --- "Uroki Garmonii (Уроки гармонии, Harmony Lessons)".  It's about a boy and his brother stuggling with bullying... who takes his frustration out on cocroaches, until he learns to fight back.

Excellent, excellent, work of art in motion.

Omar Sharif in "The Agony of Love" (1961) -- عمر الشريف في فيلم إشراعة حب

For those Omar Sharif (عمر الشريف) fans out there, here is a full feature film of his, from Egypt, in Arabic, from 1961 titled: "The Agony of Love" or إشراعة حب ('Ishra'a hob), with excellent English subtitles. Egypt, in my opinion, doesn't produce such good stuff like this anymore... Cairo used to be the be all and end all of Arab Cinema and produced some of the finest classics.

Random fact: Omar Sharif is completely fluent in Arabic, French, English, and Greek, and is of Lebanese decent. A wonderful more recent film of his from France is Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran.

Pamir Kyrgyz: 37 Uses For A Dead Sheep (Ölmüş Bir Koyunu Değerlendirmenin 37 Yolu)

I found this BBC film-documentary floating about on TV the other day and had to share. "37 Uses For A Dead Sheep" (Turkish: Ölmüş Bir Koyunu Değerlendirmenin 37 Yolu) documents the 20th century nomadic and turbulant history of the Pamir Kyrgyz Turks, tracing them from their home in the snow-capped Pamir Mountain Ranges between Afghanistan and Tajikistan all the way to the eastern-most fringes of Turkey. In case you never knew, it is wise to drink liters of yoghurt and then copiously vomit... after you have ingested poison.

I cannot find the full documentary in English, so I have included the trailer. However, I have found the Turkish version of the documentary in full, so I've posted that as well...
